How big does a chicken run need to be? Well, it is generally accepted that one adult laying hen requires a minimum of one square meter of outdoor space, although double is better. In my experience, double really is better and two square meters of outdoor space should be considered as the bare minimum for one adult laying hen. (If you can’t give your hens this much space, get fewer hens.)
Like all animals, chickens need enough room to be able to move about comfortably and to express natural behaviours. As well as scratching and foraging, your chickens will also need to be able to stretch their wings and their legs. They will also want enough room to dust bath and sunbathe!
Top Tip! Larger breeds will need more space than this, and more aggressive breeds will also need more room.
